People Management covered HBHR’s survey of 1,000 UK workers on onboarding. One in 10 (9%) said they had no formal onboarding when starting a role, and 12% said they had received little or no formal training.

The research also found that one in 10 workers had seriously considered quitting within a month of starting a new role, while 9% had left a job in the first three months. 9% took more than a year to feel fully settled and productive, and a further 7% said they never reached that point.

Age made a difference. 16% of 25 to 34 year olds said onboarding had negatively affected their view of an employer, compared with 3% of 45 to 54 year olds.

The article brings in views from First Ascent Group, Avenir Consulting and Robert Walters on the manager’s role in keeping new starters.
