Powering People Operations at Britain’s Most Successful Olympic Sporting Body
Payroll configured to fit a complex, multi-disciplinary organisation
HBHR’s payroll module has been specifically configured for British Cycling, handling the unique requirements of a workforce spanning elite coaching, events, membership services and professional administration.
A fully tailored platform, not an off-the-shelf solution
Rather than adapting their processes to fit a rigid system, British Cycling benefit from a platform built around how they actually operate.
Unified HR, Payroll and Timekeeping in one place
Bringing all people management functions into a single system gives British Cycling’s teams greater clarity, consistency and control across a large and varied workforce.
The Background
British Cycling is the national governing body for the sport of cycling in Great Britain, recognised by the UCI. Based at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, the organisation works across all levels and six disciplines of cycling: BMX, Mountain Bike, Cyclo-Cross, Road, Track and Cycle Speedway.
From encouraging first-time riders to supporting the Great Britain Cycling Team, the nation’s most successful Olympic and Paralympic sporting outfit, British Cycling serves over 130,000 members and organises more than 3,000 sporting and recreational events every year. With a workforce of around 280 employees across departments including HR, coaching, events, finance, marketing and elite performance, the organisation’s people operations are as varied as the sport itself.
The Challenge
Payroll at British Cycling is far from straightforward. With a workforce spanning elite coaches, performance staff, events teams, membership services and professional administration — many with different contract types, pay structures and working patterns — running payroll accurately and efficiently demanded a system that could handle genuine complexity.
Off-the-shelf solutions couldn’t accommodate the organisation’s specific requirements without significant compromise. British Cycling needed a platform that could be configured around how they operate, not the other way around.
The Solution
HBHR worked closely with British Cycling to deliver a fully configured platform built around the organisation’s unique payroll requirements. Rather than a generic implementation, the system was tailored to reflect British Cycling’s specific workforce structures, pay types and operational.
Alongside the configured payroll module, HR and timekeeping were also brought into the same platform, giving the organisation a single, unified system for all people management, supported by a dedicated and responsive HBHR account management team.
The Results
British Cycling now runs payroll through a system specifically configured for their needs, significantly reducing the risk of error and the manual effort previously required to manage a complex workforce. The tailored platform gives payroll and HR teams confidence that the system reflects exactly how the organisation works.
With HR, payroll and timekeeping unified in one place and ongoing support from the HBHR team, British Cycling has a scalable, reliable foundation for its people operations, fit for one of Britain’s most prominent sporting bodies.
